Q: What is Single Bound Studios (SBS)?
A: Single Bound Studios was formed by David Banks in January 2008 to provide a variety of design and bookbinding services to comic book collectors.
Q: What are all the different binding methods?
A: There are many different binding methods. We offer the following: oversew (through the side) and center sew (through the gutter).
Q: What is the oversew method?
A: Oversewn bindings are a type of bookbinding produced by sewing together loose leaves of paper to form a book block. Threads pass through small holes that have been punched in the signature's gutter margin (nearest the spine), forming overlock stitches that attach it to previously attached sections. A piece of linen is then glued to the book block spine for further support. Oversewing is usually done by an oversew machine. Oversewing is not offered in premium binding.
Q: How does hand-sewing differ from center sew?
A: Hand-sewing sews through the gutter (no cut-off occurs). Center sewing sews through the edge of the paper (some cut-off may occur).
Q: Do I have to send my comics to SBS in order to get a price quote?
A: Yes. For premium Binding Projects SBS must be able to evaluate the comics before giving you a price.
Q: What kind of prep do I need to do before sending in my books?
A: Stack comics in binding order using sticky notes to label pages with specific directions.
Q: Do I have to remove staples?
A: No. We hand remove all staples. We do not grind or cut them off.
Q: What are head and tail lines?
A: These are colored foil lines placed at the top and bottom of the spine.
Q: What are head bands and supers?
A: These are decorative pieces of cloth placed at the top and bottom of the spine of the book block.
Q: What is hand set type?
A: Every letter of the alphabet, every punctuation mark and every numerical symbol is an individual molded piece of metal in high relief on its own metal block. The raised shapes of the letters are arranged and then heated in order to stamp foil to a book cover or spine.
Q: What fonts are available?
A: For Premium Binding projects we have a variety of Serif and San-Serif fonts. We hope to post a list in the near future.
Q: How much text can fit on the spine (upper and lower)?
A: This is determined by the width of the spine. Further details can be given upon review of your order.
Q: Do you provide die-stamping on covers and spines?
A: Yes. There are extra charges for set-up and stamping.
Q: What is art-on-cover (AOC)?
A: An AOC book has laminated custom art on front and back with a buckram cloth spine.
Q: How do art-on-covers stay on?
A: This is accomplished the same way as cloth covers; by gluing the cover on one side of the chipboard.
Q: Can you trim only certain edges?
A: Yes. The top and bottom edge can be trimmed separately. However, you are unable to trim the front edge only.
Q: Who decides what is used on the cover (front and back)?
A: The customer is the ultimate decision maker. SBS can help as little or as much as the customer wants.
Q: Why is there a charge for Back cover removal (if desired) per volume?
A: Because SBS hand cuts and removes each back cover individually to maximize the amount of paper on the gutter side to be sewn.
Q: What is custom refolding and pre-trimming?
A: This is a process where SBS adjusts each page of a comic, page-by-page, to get the best end result during sewing and final trimming.
Q: What is the color selection for Ribbon Bookmark?
A: Just about anything you can image. We don't stock ribbon but rather purchase it as needed when orders come in.
Q: What are Custom end sheets?
A: End sheets are those pages at the front and back of the book. We have the ability to use customized art as specified by the customer for an additional charge.
Q: What is a Slipcase?
A: A slipcase is a four or five-sided box into which binders, books or book sets are slipped for protection. Special editions of books are often slipcased.
Q: What is a Custom Dust Jacket?
A: The dust jacket (sometimes book jacket, dust wrapper or dust cover) of a book is the detachable outer cover, usually made of paper and printed with text and illustrations. This outer cover has folded flaps that hold it to the front and back book covers. SBS can make one to the customers design specifications.
Q: What is a Clam shell?
A: We can create CLAMSHELL-STYLE BOOK BOXES that are an attractive addition to any book collection. They are custom-made to fit the book it contains, thus providing support and protection to the volume it encloses.
Q: Do you create Custom Table of Content page(s)?
A: Yes. Pricing varies depending on complexity.
Q: What shipping service do you recommend?
A: United States Postal Service Flat Rate Priority Mail boxes. You can fit up to 3 books worth of comics in the 11" X 8.5" X 5.5" medium flat rate (shoebox shaped) box.
Q: What are the payment options and when is payment due?
Payment can be made via PayPal, personal check or money order. Payment is due once you approve price quote given by David.
